Why People Believe Well-Spoken Nonsense
You’ve heard it before.
Someone speaks smoothly, confidently, and with just enough structure to sound intelligent. The language is polished. The delivery is calm. The argument feels complete.
And yet—if you slow down and examine it—there’s very little substance underneath.
Still, people believe it.
Not because they’re unintelligent.
But because well-spoken nonsense exploits how human judgment actually works.
The Illusion of Understanding

When something is expressed clearly, it creates a powerful illusion:
“If I understand it easily, it must be correct.”
This is known as processing fluency.

But once you learn to separate language from logic, something changes.
